More demand is useful when your team can deliver the next promise

For agencies, consultants and technical-service firms, sales growth and delivery capacity belong in the same conversation.

A services team examining the capacity behind new work.

A sale changes someone else's week#

For a service business, new work enters a real schedule. Someone has to onboard the client, deliver the scope, answer questions and handle exceptions. A technical rollout may require a specialist the sales forecast does not show.

The SBA's expansion guidance places readiness and costs alongside a growth plan. The operational question for a team is specific: which additional commitments can we support without weakening those already made?

A larger opportunity count does not answer it. Sales and delivery need a shared view of the work behind each proposed start.

Find the constraint behind the headcount#

Two teams with the same number of people can have very different capacity. One may have a specialist available; another may depend on that person for every project. A regional service business may have enough labour but too much travel. An agency may have creative capacity but no room for client review cycles.

Ask what actually limits a new start. Use the planning period and units that fit the work. Keep recurring support, uncertainty and existing promises visible.

The answer can change the growth choice. A clearer scope, a better-fit audience or staggered starts may be useful before another hire. If support is genuinely needed, the role should address the constraint rather than a vague sense that the team is busy.

Give sales a promise it can stand behind#

A seller should understand what delivery can support and which details require review. A delivery owner should understand what the customer is trying to achieve and what has actually been agreed.

Write the scope, likely effort, dependencies and start conditions before making a commitment. Update the proposal when new information changes them. Do not use the handoff to reveal requirements the team should have discussed earlier.

This does not require a large operating system. It requires one usable shared record and a responsible decision owner.

Grow the demand and the capacity deliberately#

The sales-and-delivery guide supplies a capacity worksheet and operating triggers. The weekly sales guide connects those decisions to current opportunities.
