Customer growth · Field notes

The next useful sale may begin with a customer you already serve

Account growth is stronger when it starts with a changed job or a new need, rather than a generic request to buy more.

Existing trust is a starting point, not evidence of a new purchase#

A business serving a customer already knows something about its work. That can make the next question more useful. It does not mean the customer has agreed to another offer or wants every department contacted.

Start with the original promise. Is the service working, and what still needs attention? A conversation about more work is weak if it ignores an unresolved commitment.

Then look for a changed circumstance: another site, a new team, a different process or a repeated workaround. The SBA's market-research foundation is useful here because demand still needs investigation even when a relationship already exists.

Ask about the new job#

For an IT provider, a new location may need a different support arrangement. For an agency, a customer's new market may change the audience and material required. For software, another team may work differently from the original users.

These are possibilities to investigate. Ask how the job is handled, who owns it and whether addressing it matters now. Keep what the person confirms separate from a signal found in public information.

Do not force the new need into the current package if the fit is poor. A useful conversation can reveal that another approach or provider is more appropriate.

Include the people around the decision#

Your existing contact may be a valuable guide without owning the new scope. Explain why another role would help and ask whether an introduction is appropriate.

Make the new decision clear to anyone joining it. Share only the information you are authorised to share. Existing access to one service does not establish permission to use another team's records or contact details.

An expansion needs its own scope, inputs, approval and delivery owner. Keep it distinct from a renewal or continuation of work already agreed.

Turn the relationship into a useful next step#

Use the account-growth guide to prepare the next-problem brief and relationship questions. Check the capacity guide before promising more work.

Kite helps businesses meet people relevant to an objective. Where a new relationship is needed, prepare the goal and required criteria with actual context. Your business remains responsible for account permissions, the commercial decision and delivery.

Growth can begin with a better understanding of an existing customer's next job. It becomes a sale only when the actual purchase is agreed, and a lasting opportunity when the new promise is delivered.
